Dermal Fillers

What are Dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are used to soften and contour lines around your mouth, eyes, nose and forehead. The most commonly used dermal fillers are Collagen based or Hyaluronic based. The end result is fuller and firmer skin.

Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane®, JUVEDERM ULTRA and Teosyal are the most commonly used fillers today. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the skin, joints and eyes. It is a precursor to collagen and is a natural and very effective humectant (water holding molecule). This helps to keep the skin supple and hydrated, and gives the skin volume. Over time the hyaluronic acid is broken down in the body. The hyaluronic acid in fillers is cross-linked to slow down the natural absorption process. This gives these fillers a longevity of 6 to 12 months.

Are Dermal Fillers Safe?

There are many different types of dermal fillers on the market. It is my priority to use only temporary fillers with a high safety profile. The fillers used have undergone years of rigorous independent research and are proven to be safe and effective. The products do not contain any animal derivatives.

Which areas can be treated?
Dermal fillers are particularly effective on the:

  • nose to mouth lines (Naso-labial folds)
  • mouth to chin lines (Marionette lines)
  • upper lip lines
  • smile lines
  • frown lines (often following treatment with Botox)

How are dermal fillers different from Botox?

The dermal fillers we use are a natural cosmetic filler. In contrast, Botox is a drug that blocks nerve transmission and relaxes the underlying muscles. Many patients have been very pleased after receiving treatment with both products simultaneously.

The treatment:

An anaesthetic cream is applied to the area prior to the treatment so that any discomfort is minimal. The filler is then injected with a very fine needle under the skin surface. The treatment takes around 30 minutes and the effects are immediate. After the treatment the area may be slightly red and swollen, however you can resume normal activities and drive yourself home or return to work immediately after the treatment. Vigorous exercise should be avoided for 24 hours.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Injection related reactions: These may include swelling, redness, discomfort and bruising at the injection site immediately after the treatment. These reactions are usually mild and resolve within a few days. The risk of an allergic reaction is extremely rare and they are usually self-limiting. Allergic reactions can be treated with corticosteroids or the product removed using an injectable enzyme. As with all injections, there is risk of infection. The syringe is sterile and the standard precautions associated with using injectable materials are taken.

Cost:

This can vary and depends on the filler used and amount required. Prices start from £175

Are there any long term problems?

No because it is completely natural and over time can be completely broken down by the body.

Type of fillers used:

Dermadoc uses only the best and safest types of fillers on the market including Juvederm ULTRA, Teosyal, Restylane, Perlane and Hydrafill (plus several more).

Our preferred brand is Juvederm Ultra® as it appears to give a softer result and also, importantly, causes less discomfort and bruising for our clients.

Restylane®, Juvederm Ultra®, and Teosyal® are all made from non-animal sources and are available in different versions each having slightly different properties tailored exactly to a specific use.

For example:

Juvederm Ultra 2
A highly cross-linked formulation for the subtle correction of medium facial lines and skin depressions. Also enhances lip contour.

Juvederm Ultra 3
A highly cross-linked formulation for more versatility in contouring and volumising medium to deep facial lines and skin depressions, such as nasolabial folds. Also enhances lip contour and volume.

Juvederm Ultra 4
A highly cross-linked robust formulation for volumising and correction of deeper folds and wrinkles, including enhancing volume in the cheeks and chin. This formulation should not be injected into the glabella (frown lines) or into the areas under the eyes.
